Guildford Borough Council will mark next year's Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games celebrations by spending £240,000 on what they're calling "landmark events".

In June the Queen will be celebrating her Diamond Jubilee to mark 60 years of her reign and the council will be hosting and supporting community events across the borough and there are also plans to dress Guildford High Street.

Meanwhile, a month later, Guildford will take part in the celebrations marking the Olympic Games in London.

The Guildford leg of the torch relay will happen a week before the start of the Games (which is the 27th July) whilst the cycling road race event will pass through the borough on the 28th and 29th July following a successful trial event in the summer.

Cllr Jen Powell, Lead Councillor for Culture and Leisure said: "We want to inspire our future generations and welcome everyone to share in the Olympic spirit. The £240,000 funding will be used to host and manage the main events and help our communities across the borough to celebrate both the Olympic Games and Diamond Jubilee in 2012."

What do you think? Is £240,000 a justifiable amount to spend on these "landmark events"? If so, or if not, why? Leave a comment with your thoughts.
