Surrey County Council are making preparations for winter early by stockpiling a record number of salt in the Guildford area.

In the event of snow in the region more than forty gritters are standing by in depots in Merrow, Witley, Bagshot and Godstone.

The amount of salt for this year has been increased by 4,000 tonnes to 17,000.

We've been planning for months to help keep Surrey's road network moving as much as possible in ice and snow," said  Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment Ian Lake.

"Our salt barns are almost full and the final deliveries will be arriving in the coming days.

"Once again we've made salt available to Surrey's borough and district councils so they can send teams out in town centres and have provided grit bins so residents can treat their local roads and pavements to benefit their communities"

Last year saw snow arrive as early as December with many services like buses and trains being stopped altogether. The bus services in particular had major problems making their way through rural areas where roads hadn't been cleared properly.

The weather also had an affect on waste collections throughout the borough.
