A new cycling festival could be making its way to Guildford next year.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson today unveiled plans for the capital and Surrey to host a cycling festival in a speech to business leaders in Davos, Switzerland where the World Economic Forum is currently taking place.

The second day of said festival would involve thousands of amateur and professional athletes tackling a 100-mile course based on the one being used for this year's Olympic road cycling events, which will pass through towns in the borough such as Shere and Clandon.

The first day of the event would be a family-based event that would see cyclists go round a route that takes in some of London's most famous landmarks.

"We are delighted to be working with London to build on the 2012 Olympic legacy," said Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games.

"The festival will add to Surrey's growing reputation as a top cycling destination. It will drive tourism, boost the Surrey economy and I'm sure people will love the chance to get involved in such an exciting event."

Guildford People will have more news on the Olympic events as the following weeks and months go by.
