GUILDFORD folk with a passion for Latin music are this month (January, 2013) invited to see a quartet perform at a bar in the town.
The Santiago Quartet will be performing at Bar des Arts on Monday, January 28 from 7pm.
Sara Burks, Co-owner of Bar des Arts, which is located opposite the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Millbrook, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Santiago Quartet to the bar. They will be entertaining the audience with some contemporary classical Latin music.
“The Latin cross-over string quartet will perform a variety of songs during the evening including works by Astor Piazzolla and a rendition of its well-known ‘Birthday Quartet’ piece, which was commissioned for Tony Hennessey-Brown’s 70th birthday. Its world premier was performed at the Guildford Spring Music Festival last year (2012).”
The Santiago Quartet formed in 2008 and aims to promote contemporary Latin music across the UK and abroad.
It performs works by Latin composers and collaborates with musicians from around the world.
Its first album, ‘Latin Perspective’ was pre-nominated for five Latin Grammy awards in 2012 and has received reviews in publications including Gramophone and Jazzwise.
The Santiago Quartet also introduces young musicians to Latin American music through workshops and classes in schools.
Sara added: “The Santiago Quartet has recently collaborated with singer-songwriter Ana Silvera at the Purcell Room and performed live on BBC Radio 3. They have also played sell out shows at famous clubs around the country, including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, so we are looking forward to their performance at the bar.
“From 10pm until midnight there will be music played by DJ David Jarvis for people to enjoy.”
Tickets for the event will cost £4 per person. Booking is advisable and can be done by calling the bar on 01483 453227.
Bar des Arts is a café by day and a wine and cocktail bar by night. A range of wine, beers, cocktails and soft drinks are available to purchase, along with tapas. The bar hosts a variety of events and exhibitions, including live music, dance performances, open mic nights and many more.
