SALSA lovers from Guildford are next month (September, 2013) invited to put on their dancing shoes and learn some moves during monthly classes starting at a bar in the town.
Julia Janikova will be hosting the first dance class at Bar des Arts, which is located opposite the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Millbrook, on Tuesday, September 10 from 7.30pm.
Julia, who recently graduated in Dance and Culture from the University of Surrey, said: “I can’t wait to host the classes at the bar. Salsa dancing is an uplifting and fun way to exercise while learning a new skill. Through my dance experiences, I wish to share and spread the love of salsa dancing far and wide.
“The class will last one hour and people can learn at a beginner level. After the class we will be turning up the music and people can show off what they’ve learnt during a Latin party from 8.30pm.”
Twenty-nine-year-old Julia started salsa dancing in 2006 and has learnt the different styles of the dance, including LA, Cuban and Cali style salsa.
She was a member of the Oxford University Salsa Team from September 2008 until June 2010 and was coached by top international dance teachers Giles and Rosa Eadle from Ignite Dance Company.
Salsa is a form of dance originating from the style of music, Cuban Son and Afro-Cuban dance.
While many styles of the dance have been developed, the basis of it remains a dancer changing his or her weight by stepping, while the upper body remains level.
The night will be sponsored by Abuelo Rum. Tickets for the dance classes will cost £5 per person and include a free rum cocktail for people over 18-years-old. Booking is essential and can be done by calling the bar on 01483 453227.
Sara Burks, Co-owner of Bar des Arts, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Julia to the bar. She is an experienced dance teacher and we think people will be able to learn the basics of salsa very quickly. The classes will take place monthly so people can progress to learning more intricate dance moves.”
Bar des Arts is a café by day and a wine and cocktail bar by night. A range of wine, beers, cocktails and soft drinks are available to purchase, along with meat or cheese platters. The bar hosts a variety of events and exhibitions, including live music, dance performances, open mic nights and many more.
The first salsa dance class will take place at Bar des Arts on Tuesday, September 10 from 7.30pm.
