Drink Drive Limit to be Lowered?

If the Government follows advice and lowers the legal limit for blood alcohol when driving from 80mg per 100ml to 50 mg it could save thousands of lives.
Slashing the limit by almost half would bring the UK inline with other European countries such as France where the limit is already 50mg. In Hungary however the limit is 0mg and the alcohol related death rate on the roads is half ours.
Road safety campaigners welcomed the recommendations claiming that it would save over 160 lives every year, however the Drinks industry warned that it might sound the death knell for many pubs that are fighting hard to stay above water.
What do you think? Do the potential benefits outweigh the consequences or should we be doing everything we can to save our pubs?
