Members of the contaminated blood campaign have expressed their shock that Conservative MP for Guildford, Anne Milton, has called a meeting at Westminster on Armistice Day,11th November. The meeting, to be hosted by Mrs Milton and her officials is aimed at MPs and any of their constituents who have been affected by the issues raised by the campaign. It follows a recent debate in the House of Commons which caused an outcry from MPs and campaigners alike.
Sue Threakall, secretary of the campaign group TaintedBlood, said today:
'Whilst we obviously welcome any attempt by Government to bring about closure after 25 years of campaigning, I was shocked and saddened that Mrs Milton had decided to hold our meeting on 11th November. Its timing - from 10.00 - 12.30 a.m. means that any MP who wished to attend an Armistice Day service will have to choose between the two. I do not feel it is right that they should have to make this choice, and that this date should be sacrosanct on the Government's calender. Moreover I feel that Mrs Milton's place on this day should be with those constituents who elected her, in order to honour those citizens of Guildford who gave up their lives for us all.'
Sue went on to say: 'I would like to reassure the people of Guildford that if Mrs Milton insists on holding the meeting on this particular day, our members will honour the two minutes silence at 11:00'
