The Cold Spell Continues

Parts of the UK have

been experiencing some of the coldest weather for many years and

Guildford has not escaped. With temperatures not set to rise above

freezing for the rest of the week and heavy snows forecast it looks

like it isn't going to improve for some time.

As usual at this time

of year the elderly are the most vulnerable and Age Concern's

official winter statement puts things into perspective. “For older

people‚ protection against the cold is vital. Last winter’s cold

snap sent excess winter mortality to a 10-year high‚ with around

three quarters of excess winter deaths recorded among people aged 75

or over.”

We can all help, do you

know someone elderly who lives alone? Why not pop round and make

sure they are OK. Perhaps you could offer to do their shopping for

them, maybe just pick up a much needed prescription. With the sorry

state of the gritting at the moment it could be the difference

between life or death to the most vulnerable.

Let's show the rest of

the UK how its done.

This is a really good idea, I'm in!

You can always tell when the ground is frozen because A&E is full of old women with broken arms.  People don't realise how hard it is for old people to get about.
