When the diocese of Guildford was created in 1927 the Church of the Holy Trinity in the High Street was used as the Cathedral, however it was soon shown to be too small and so it was decided to build a new Cathedral.

One hundred and eighty three designs were submitted before the winning mix of modern and traditional submitted by Edward Maufe was chosen.

Building work stopped for the duration of WWII and was eventually completed and consecrated for use in May 1961.

The red bricks of the external construction are from the very hill upon which the Cathedral stands, however the limestone of the pillars comes from Somerset, and the marble floors are Italian.  The organ used to see use in the Rosse Street Baptist Church in Shipley, Yorkshire and was installed by the Liverpool firm of Rushworth and Dreaper.

The golden angel on top of the tower turns in the wind and contains a mobile phone mast for Orange.

Somewhat controversially the building has been likened to a power station, an aircraft hanger and has even been called the ugliest Cathedral in England.

What do you think?

Asthetics aside, I have found that the phone mast fact makes for "good" Guildford trivia...
