On Track..Olympic Training In Guildford
-
Sir Viv Richards
It's going to give so many local kids the opportunity to see some great athletes and help put Guildford's sporting facilties on the map.
West Indian cricketing legend Sir Vivian Richards, who is part of the Antigua and Barbuda Olympic delegation will be at the signing of an agreement to base the Antigua and Barbuda Olympic team in Surrey for the 2012 Games, alongside former England captain and Surrey batsmen Alec Stewart (who is also Surrey Sports Parkambassador) at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford next Friday to seal the deal.
The athletes from the Caribbean nation will train in the county and will also be using facilities at Guildford Spectrum sports complex.
The park, which was officially opened in April, is owned by the University of Surrey. The latest move comes after the park hosted the Women's Rugby World Cup in August.
It's good to se that Guildford is being recognised as a sporting centre isn't it? After all, we should be proud that we have a world-class training environment in the area. Hopefully other teams will also come to the Guildford area.
Apart from being able to see the athletes (not to mention being abelt to reap the £25,000 that each organising committee has to spend on facilities), maybe some of our young sporting enthusiasts might take some incentives!
