There was an interesting twist to Monday the 11th's English Martial Arts Academy training session, and Guildford's Spectrum Leisure Centre.

Despite the harsh weather, snow and icey grounds, several members battled through the nasty conditions to join us for another great lesson.

This week's session focused on some intense fitness work, drills to improve our new members' swordplay, and focused partner work to help them build their skills in preparation for more sparring.

The important influences of heightened adrenalin and tiredness on sword play, were effectively shown with intense exercise before drills, coupled with some mild stress-training.

The session ended on a high, when questions regarding wrestling turned into a demonstration of "up close and personal" groundwork. Unsurprisingly perhaps, this was fit to raise a few eyebrows from the badminton players on the adjacement court when they peeked around the curtain!    As well as being practiced in 16th Century weapons-based martial arts, the main instructor is very capable of demonstrating his knowledge in the more modern 'cage-fighting style' of combat.
