Guildford could soon see charging points being built for electric cars if the Surrey County Council have a bid for government cash approved that is heavily focused on being eco-friendly.

The Council have applied to the Department for Transport for £5 million worth of cash to improve the public transport system as a whole, including more cycle routes and the improvement of several bus routes. Other parts of the bid, being called Travel Smart, include:

  •     More information at bus stops for passengers.
  •     Priority to buses at road junctions.
  •     Encouraging walking by increasing safety measures at crossings and more signage.
However, the most intriguing aspect of the proposal is the electric car charging points being proposed. The council want to build a network of points in both Guildford and Woking. They then want to work with local businesses to set up an electric car loan scheme.

SCC cabinet member Ian Lake said: "We want to make it easier and more convenient for people to use public transport, cycle or walk."

What do you think of Travel Smart? Would you approve the scheme should it get the go-ahead from the government? What can be done to improve public transport? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

Can't see this taking off somehow - the 4x4 brigade are much too established to use this system. It would be really handy to be able to easily recharge my Smartphone ;-)
